Asthma Risks

Since asthma is an ongoing condition that interferes with your child’s breathing, it can create both short-term and long-term challenges for you and your family. That’s why understanding your child’s risk of uncontrolled asthma, along with warning signs of asthma, is so important.

“In the case where your child is having an asthma attack, the worst thing that you can do is panic.”

Assessing the short-term risks of asthma

Gaining control over a child’s asthma is a goal for many parents. Get started by asking yourself the following questions.

  • Does your child often wake up in the middle of the night with asthma symptoms?
  • Does your child miss days at daycare or school due to his or her asthma?
  • Do you limit your child’s activities due to fear of an asthma attack?
  • Do you notice differences in what activities your child can participate in during certain times of the year?
  • Are you often pulled out of work due to your child having an asthma-related problem or emergency?
  • Are you making frequent or urgent trips to the ER or to your child’s primary care physician?
  • Do you live with the fear that your child could have an asthma attack when you are not around?

As you can see, uncontrolled asthma can raise numerous questions and concerns. Knowing what to expect during an asthma attack shouldn’t be one of them. To see an example of what happens during an asthma attack, check out the video below.

Protecting your child in the long run

Many would agree that the risks of uncontrolled asthma can weigh heavily on the mind. That’s why it’s important to talk to your doctor about your child’s risk and to discuss ways you can help get your child's asthma under control.
