Using the Asthma Action Plan

The goal of therapy is control — an asthma action plan helps parents and caregivers help kids

In the treatment of pediatric asthma, an asthma action plan can help a child’s caregiver provide appropriate care. The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP)1 recommends creating a written plan that includes instructions for the daily management of persistent asthma and actions to take if symptoms worsen. Talking parents or caregivers through the plan can help them understand the importance of daily therapy and when to seek help.1

Updated NHLBI/NAEPP guidelines stress control

In 2007, the NHLBI/NAEPP updated its clinical guidelines for managing asthma. The updated guidelines emphasize asthma control, avoiding overuse of rescue medications, ongoing monitoring, and the creation of a daily asthma action plan for parents to follow. These guidelines are aimed at achieving control.
