Seasonal Asthma Triggers

Seasonal factors can make asthma symptom control harder to achieve. Be sure the parents and caregivers in your practice are aware of — and taking steps to reduce the impact of — seasonal triggers. Here is some advice to share.

Winter asthma triggers18-21

  • Colder, drier air
  • Seasonal colds and illnesses
  • Increased exposure to indoor allergens and irritants
  • Fireplace smoke

During winter months, be cautious about children's surroundings, especially when children are in contact with people who are sick. Keep holiday decorations clean and simple, to avoid any excess dust that may result from their storage.

Spring asthma triggers18,19

  • Grass and tree pollen
  • Increased mold counts on humid days and after rainfall
  • Heat and humidity
  • Dust on dirty air-conditioning filters

During the spring pollen season, try to keep children indoors on dry, hot, windy days. Keeping windows closed and using an air conditioner may be helpful. To avoid bringing pollen into the house, avoid hanging clothes outside to dry, where pollen and mold spores can collect on them.

Summer asthma triggers18,19

  • Grass and tree pollen
  • Increased mold counts on humid days and after rainfall
  • Extreme heat and humidity
  • Dust on dirty air-conditioning filters
  • Smog/poor air quality

As in spring, keep children indoors on dry, hot, windy days. Continue to use an air conditioner to avoid bringing pollen into the home. Consider alternatives to outdoor activities on extremely hot days when poor air quality is forecast.

Fall asthma triggers18,20-22

  • Viral illnesses (cold or flu)
  • Changes in temperature
  • Weed and grass pollen
  • Outdoor airborne molds
  • School pets

During the fall, children should avoid raking, playing in, or walking through fallen leaves to avoid outdoor airborne molds. Have parents check their children’s classroom for any obvious triggers.
